The Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities (LERM) provides for general municipal elections to be held in every municipality in Québec on the first Sunday in November every four years.

The next municipal general election will be held on November 2, 2025..

The returning officer is responsible for ensuring that the election is held and that the election procedure, from the nomination stage to the proclamation of the election following the poll, is carried out properly.

Open positions for candidacies

The following positions are open for candidacies in the 2025 general municipal elections for the Municipality of Pontiac:

  • Mayor

Conditions of Eligibility

To run for a position on municipal council, certain conditions must be met.

You are eligible if, on polling day:

  • You are 18 years of age or older;
  • You are a Canadian citizen;
  • You have not lost your right to vote due to guardianship;
  • You have not been found guilty of an electoral fraud offence in the past five years;
  • Be in one of the following situations:

- Be domiciled within the municipality and, for at least six months, in Quebec;
- Be the owner of an immovable property or the occupant of a business establishment located within the municipality for at least 45 days as of polling day;

  • Reside within the municipality at the time your Nomination form is filed;
  • Not be in a situation of ineligibility.

Nomination Filing Period

In accordance with the provisions of the Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalitiesany person wishing to run for one of the elective positions of the Municipality of Pontiac must file a Nomination paper, duly completed and accompanied by the required documents, within the prescribed deadlines.

Nomination papers must be filed on the following dates and times:

  • September 19, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • From September 22 to September 26, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • From September 29 to October 3, 2025  from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (except on September 30, statutory holiday – offices closed)

  • October 3, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Nominations must be filed at the Office of the Returning Officer, at the Town Hall located at 2024 Route 148, Pontiac, Quebec J0X 2G0.

Anyone interested in running for office must meet the eligibility requirements set out by law.

If you wish to collect contributions and incur election expenses as an independent candidate or as a political party, several rules must be followed.

Candidacy for the position of Warden of the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais

The position of Warden of the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais is elected by universal suffrage. Citizens of all the municipalities within the MRC are called upon to elect the person who will hold this office.

The municipal council is not dissolved, but it must stop sitting at 4:30 p.m., 30 days before polling day, except in case of an emergency. Both the mayor and the councillors remain in office until the swearing-in of the newly elected council members.

Recruiting

The Returning Officer is currently seeking reliable, motivated, and organized citizens to join the election team for voting day on November 2, 2025, as well as for advance voting on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

By working as an election staff member, you directly contribute to the smooth running of the democratic process while being compensated.

  • Poll Clerk ($276): supervises the polling station, manages the voting process, and assists with the vote count.
  • Polling Station Secretary ($252): assists the poll clerk and keeps the records.
  • Information and Order Officer (PRIMO) ($315): ensures order and safe access at the polling station, directs voters, and enforces compliance with the rules.
  • Member of the Identification Verification Table ($215): Participates in verifying voters’ identities according to established procedures.

  • Chair of the Identification Verification Table ($240): Supervises the Identification Verification Table and ensures strict adherence to the rules.

  • Revisor for the Board of Revisors ($900): Participates in revising the voters list, meets with residents who wish to make a change, reviews applications, and ensures the list is up to date.
  • Revising Officer for the Board of Revisors ($650): Supports the Board of Revisors by conducting field verifications and delivering notices of summons or decisions to electors.

Eligibility conditions

To be part of the election staff, you must:

  • Be available for training days, advance voting days, and voting day.
  • Be reliable, punctual, and respectful of procedures.
  • Knowledge of French is essential; knowledge of English is an asset.
